Successful PhD Defense: Dr. Alper Idrisoglu

Successful PhD Defense: Dr. Alper Idrisoglu

We are proud to announce that Alper Idrisoglu has successfully defended his PhD thesis on October 15, 2025, at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH).

His dissertation, titled “Voice as a Digital Biomarker: Machine Learning Applications for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment”, explores how the human voice can serve as a non-invasive indicator of respiratory health. Through a series of four studies, the research demonstrates how machine learning and acoustic signal analysis can distinguish between individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and healthy controls using simple voice recordings collected via mobile devices.

The findings show the potential of voice-based digital biomarkers to support early detection, monitoring, and clinical decision-making in respiratory care. The work connects health technology, artificial intelligence, and clinical research in an innovative way.

The public defense took place at BTH’s Department of Health with Professor Julie Wall from the University of Westminster, United Kingdom as the opponent and an examination committee representing several Swedish universities.

Congratulations, Dr. Idrisoglu, on this remarkable achievement.
